A group of papier mâché lacquer including a rare snuff-box and a birchwood cigarette-box
by the Lukutin Factory, Moscow, mid- and late 19th century
An oblong snuff-box with rounded corners, the cover with a portrait of a lady holding a book, within an oval reserve, the border, sides and base painted to simulate mother-of-pearl, enhanced by gilt scroll and trellis borders, the interior painted to simulate tortoiseshell; a cylindrical box with detachable cover painted with a lady having tea, both marked under covers; a pocket folio, the cover painted with a summer troika, lined with cream silk, marked on the back cover; a rectangular birchwood cigar-box, the cover set with an oval lacquer plaque depicting two men in a rural landscape; and a rectangular case of oval section and detachable cover, the front painted with 'Demian's Fish Soup' after A. A. Popov, both apparently unmarked
