4o (255 x 175 mm). 12 lithographs and numerous illustrations throughout by Joseph Pennell. Near contemporary green crushed morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt, vellum doublures richly tooled to a Moorish design in gilt, red and green by the "Sutherland" process, green silk moiré endpapers, top edges gilt, others uncut by G.T. Baggeley, with his ink patent stamp on the verso of the front free endpaper; green cloth folding box. Provenance: Harold Douthit (bookplate).
LIMITED ISSUE, one of 500 copies with the extra lithographs by Pennell. A fine copy in a handsome "Sutherland Binding." "Named after the Duchess of Sutherland, the process involved the application of colour tooling, combined with conventional gilt tooling, on vellum doublures. The best of the designs were by Leon V. Solon... others examples were designed by Dorothy Talbot and Charles Connor. The exteriors of the 'Sutherland Bindings' usually have no more than a simple panelled decoration..."
