(Lacking 3 leaves of dedication [*2-*5] and errata leaf [***4], some occasional spotting and browning.) 18th-century calf, spine gilt (joints and edges worn, spine ends chipped); maroon quarter morocco folding case. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Kepler's complete Epitome, consisting of seven books originally published in three installments from 1618-1621. The first three books deal with spherical astronomy, book four is on theoretical astronomy, while books five to seven deal with practical geometrical problems arising from the elliptical orbits, the law of areas, and his lunar theory; and together with Book IV they served as the theoretical explanation to the Tabulae Rudolphinae. Kepler designed the work as an inexpensive and readily understandable textbook of the new astronomy, hence the octavo size and the question and answer format. Caspar 87; Lalande p.205.
