A ROMAN MARBLE FIGURE OF A WOMAN
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
Standing on an integral plinth with her weight on her left leg, her right relaxed and bent at the knee, wearing a floor-length tunic with buttoned sleeves, and a palla draped over her left shoulder and around her waist and legs, with a thick horizontal gathering high on her waist, the palla originally pulled up over the back of her head as a veil, its horizontal edge terminating across her shoulders, the smooth folds of the palla contrasting with the deeply-drilled vertical folds of the tunic, her left arm akimbo and completely enveloped in the fabric, her right arm extending slightly out, with long tendrils of hair falling onto each shoulder, the base of a shaft preserved on the rear corner of the plinth, and remains of a strut along the right leg, another on the right arm below the shoulder
57 in. (144.7 cm.) high
