The MILGAUSS was designed for use in areas of high electro-magnetic fields found in laboratories and electro-engineering. One of the most distinctive of all Rolex Sports models, reference 1019 was the last "tool" watch designed for a specific activity to be made by the Genevan firm. In production from 1966 to 1990, the model was only available in stainless steel. Its name is derived from the Greek "Mil" for thousand and "Gauss", the unit to measure magnetism. Whereas a standard watch movement can withstand a magnetic flux density of 70-90 Gauss, the Milgauss is resistant to 1,000 Gauss and will remain precise in highly magnetic environments.
In 2007, Rolex reintroduced the legendary model in three versions under the reference 116400 with a series of improvements and available exclusively in stainless steel. The "green crystal" version (see lot 3442) is today one of the most sought after modern Rolex's.
