Lot Essay

The present example with its more ornate style and decoration is a classic example of the Surat type of chest. The strip of pierced brass plate that extends the width of the chest above the drawers and the shape and style of the hasp are further indications of this type. The incorporation of a base with shaped bracket feet suggests the present lot may originate from Oman.
