Lot Essay

Carved oak figures with stylistically comparable bearded faces and/or hands were usually carved into pew-ends and are found in a number of churches in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Similar examples are illustrated in Arthur Gardner, Minor English Wood Sculpture 1400-1550, London, 1958, nos. 49 - 51.
