Lot Essay

The 'Ladies of Llangollen', Lady Eleanor Butler (d.1829) and The Honourable Sarah Ponsonby (d.1831) whose relationship scandalized and fascinated their contemporaries, moved to Plas Newydd, Llangollen in 1780. They decorated the house in the Gothic style adding many antique wood carvings to the exterior. Queen Charlotte persuaded King George III to grant them a pension.
