Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and his wife, Laura, moved into 44 Grove End Road in St. John's Wood in 1883, the house previously having belonged to James Tissot. While Sir Lawrence was particularly interested in the Italianate style, Laura had a penchant for 17th Century Dutch interiors as can be seen in this room, which Beresford, their neighbour, has chosen to depict. The Beresfords have been connected to the FitzHerberts of Tissington Hall by marriage since the early 16th Century.
