3 works bound in one volume, small 8°. (A few leaves stained at lower edge, occasional very light spotting and staining, some worming mainly to upper forecorner of third work with loss of letters to some leaves.) Lowndes II, 804. First printed in 1523 by Richard Pynson.
Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red morocco lettering-piece (head of upper joints splitting, rubbed). Provenance: Joseph Berisford (early signature on title of first work); early cropped inscription at head of title of first named work and some marginalia throughout all three works in the same hand. All three works are RARE.
"The author [Sir John Fitzherbert] of this curious and interesting volume [The Boke of Husbandry] who has by many been looked upon as the father of English husbandry, wrote from his own experience of more than forty years, and excepting his Biblical allusions and some vestiges of the superstitions of the Roman writers about the influence of the moon, there is very little in his work that should be omitted - and not a great deal that need be added in so far as regards the culture of corn - in a manual of husbandry adapted to the present time" (see Donald McDonald's Agricultural Writers from Sir Walter of Henley to Arthur Young 1200-1800 which dedicates 11 pages to the work and its author).
