The S.S. Philadelphia was built in 1889 by J. & G. Thomson, Ltd. in Glasgow, Scotland, weighing 10,786 tons and measuring 527ft x 63 ft, and was rigged with three masts and two funnels. Her first voyage as Philadelphia was from Southampton to New York on August 31, 1901. As the U.S.S. Philadelphia, she served as a troop transport for the United States during World War I. She resumed regular service in March of 1920 and was scrapped in Italy in 1923.
