Présenté de face, la tête légèrement inclinée vers la droite, l'épaule gauche drapée sous une étoffe maintenue par une fibule; dans une monture étroite en or enchâssée dans un cadre en bois associé, incrusté de pierres dures et bordé de colonnes Corinthiennes surmontées d'un fronton découpé orné d'un vase de fleurs, reposant sur un chevalet, le cadre portant le sceau 'HM', pour Hugues et Morel à Londres

A CARVED OVAL ONYX CAMEO BUST OF A YOUNG FAUN
18TH CENTURY
Facing front, the head tilted slightly to the right, the left shoulder draped and brooched; in narrow gold mount in wood and associated hardstone-inlaid wood epitaph frame flanked by Corinthian columns surmounted by a broken pediment enclosing a vase of flowers, on an easel, the frame stamped 'H.M', for Hugues & Morel, London

The original gem in the Farnese collection - upon which the present example is based - was also reproduced in a 15th century plaquette (see E. F. Bange Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Die Bildwerke in Bronze und in anderen Metallen, Berlin, 1923, p. 14, no. 94, pl. 25), and in paste and plaster casts (see L. P. B. Stefanelli, La Collezione Paoletti, Rome, 2007, 323, IV, no. 622).
