En haut relief, barbu, couronné de feuilles de chêne, présenté de trois-quarts tourné vers la gauche, l'égide indiquée sur l'épaule droite; dans une monture ovale en or appliquée sur un fond incrusté de pierres dures rouges et vertes à motif de losanges, sur une agate tigrée, enchâssé dans un cadre associé rectangulaire en ébène et bronze doré, surmonté d'un anneau de suspension

A CARVED OVAL AGATE CAMEO BUST OF HERCULES
CIRCA 1800
In high relief, bearded, crowned with oak leaves, facing three quarters to the left, aegis indicated on the right shoulder; in an oval gold mount applied to a lozenge-shaped red and green hardstone ground on banded agate, within an associated rectangular ormolu-mounted ebony frame with suspension loop
The bust of Zeus - the greatest of the gods of Mount Olympus - is one of many copies inspired by the Hellenistic sardonyx cameo from Ephesus, now in the Museo Archeologico, Venice. For two others in Munich see I. Weber, Geschnittene Steine des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts (Munich, 1995), nos. 158, 174.
