A CARVED OVAL ONYX CAMEO BUST OF THE EMPEROR GORDIAN III
LATE 16TH CENTURY
Wreathed, paludamentum over corselet, facing in profile to the right; in an oval gold mount applied to a red jasper ground within an associated oval gilt-bronze frame in the form of a double-headed Imperial eagle, claws gripping sword and sceptre, surmounted by a crown
Numerous cameos of Roman Emperors were produced in Italy at the end of the sixteenth and during the seventeenth century to embellish jewellery, display vessels and objets de luxe. For a similar example see O. M. Dalton, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems of Post Classical periods in the British Museum (London, 1915, nos. 346-257). For another frame with this symbolism, though without the sword and sceptre, see R. Gennaioli, Le Gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti (Florence, 2007) no. 878, also set with an Roman Imperial portrait cameo.
