Couronné, portant un paludamentum sur un corselet, de profil tourné vers la droite; dans une monture ovale en or, appliqué sur un fond de jaspe rouge, enchâssé dans un cadre ovale associé en bronze doré ayant la forme d'un aigle impérial à double tête, les serres saisissant une épée et un sceptre, surmonté d'une couronne

A CARVED OVAL ONYX CAMEO BUST OF THE EMPEROR GORDIAN III
LATE 16TH CENTURY
Wreathed, paludamentum over corselet, facing in profile to the right; in an oval gold mount applied to a red jasper ground within an associated oval gilt-bronze frame in the form of a double-headed Imperial eagle, claws gripping sword and sceptre, surmounted by a crown

Numerous cameos of Roman Emperors were produced in Italy at the end of the sixteenth and during the seventeenth century to embellish jewellery, display vessels and objets de luxe. For a similar example see O. M. Dalton, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems of Post Classical periods in the British Museum (London, 1915, nos. 346-257). De nombreux camées représentant des empereurs romains furent produits en Italie à la fin du XVIème siècle et tout au long du XVIIème siècle afin de décorer des bijoux, exposer de la vaisselle d'apparat et des objets de luxe. Pour un exemple similaire, voir O.M. Dalton, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems of the Post Classical Periods in the British Museum (Londres, 1915, nos. 346-357). Un autre cadre, au même symbolisme bien que sans épée ni sceptre, est illustré dans R. Gennaioli, Le Gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti (Florence, 2007, no. 878); celui-ci illustrant également un camée au portrait d'Empereur romain.
