A CIRCULAR PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME ENAMEL PLATE OF THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI
ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN COURT, CIRCA 1580-1600
Depicting the Virgin and Child to the centre with St. Joseph in the background and surrounded by the Three Magi, in a landscape with classical ruins inscribed along the bottom edge '.TRIVM.REGVM.OBLATIO.', with an outer border of grotesque masks, fantastical beasts, cartouches and a coat of arms along the bottom edge; the reverse with four grotesque masks within strapwork and an outer border of gilt stiff-leaf decoration; minor chips

The coat of arms on the present plate are those of the de Vic family, who were originally from Guyenne, and may indicate that it was originally commissioned by Méry de Vic, president of the parliament of Toulouse in 1597 (Descheemaeker, op. cit., pp. 94-95). It is one of a series of plates from the same service which are still extant, including an example in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, and five in the Grünes Gewölbe Museum in Dresden.

Les armoiries figurant sur cette assiette sont celles de la famille de Vic, originaires de Guyenne, ce qui suggérerait que cette assiette fut à l'origine commandée par Méry de Vic, président du parlement de Toulouse en 1597 (Descheemaeker, op. cit., pp. 94-95). Celle-ci fait partie d'une série d'assiettes d'un même service, dont un exmplaire est aujourd'hui conservé à l'Ermitage, à St. Petersbourg, ainsi que cinq autres versions désormais conserveés au Grünes Gewölbe Museum à Dresde.
