Lot Essay

These elegant side chairs, en suite with the previous armchairs, with light French 'cabriolet' and white-painted frames, have their Roman-medallion backs enriched with golden antique-flutes like the hermed pilaster legs and the rails, whose corner tablets are sculpted with bas-relief and 'Apollo' sunflowered libation-patera. Similar chairs, also with palm-lapped arms were provided in the 1770s for the architect Robert Adam's Pantheonic rotunda at Kedleston, Derbyshire by the Berkeley Square cabinet-maker John Linnell (d.1796) (see E. Harris, The Genius of Robert Adam, London, 2001, p. 39, fig. 52).
