Lot Essay

These chairs relate to designs by Thomas Sheraton for 'Drawing Room Chair and Parlour Chair', and reproduced in Sheraton Furniture Designs from the Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing-book 1791-94, with a preface by Ralph Edwards, London, 1949, pl. 40-43. Similar painted or 'japanned' chairs with caned seats were also being produced at the same time by Gillows of Lancaster (See Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, pp. 191-193).
