Lot Essay

Pierre Forget (1723-1789), maître in 1755.
Judging by the hundreds of unfinished pieces left in his workshop after his death, Forget's atelier must have been a very active one. A comparable fauteuil is illustrated in G. Wannenes, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème siècle, 1998, Milan, p. 313. A related set of fauteuils with similar Aubusson tapestry, was sold from the Collection of the Vicomte de Salins, Parke-Bernet, New York, 18 March, 1939, lots 134-136, and another, offered anonymously, Christie's, New York, 21 October 1997, lot 212.
