Lot Essay

With a rounded seat and almost identical embellishments on the turnings, this Windsor armchair is closely related to two examples in the collections of Winterthur Museum and the Nantucket Historical Association and attributed by Nancy Goyne Evans to Philadelphia, circa 1764-1770. See Nancy Goyne Evans, American Windsor Chairs (Winterthur, Delaware, 1996), pp. 93-94, figs. 3.29, 3-31; for a similar armchair in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, see Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America, vol. 1 (Philadelphia, 1981), fig. 82, p. 91.
