Lot Essay

Both prototypes were in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden from 1750. The first, by Van Mieris, originally signed, on panel, 59.5 x 46 cm, was destroyed in World War II (O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris The Elder, 1981, Vol.II, pp.20-22, No19, plate 19; including a list of 12 copies). The second, by Netscher, oil on canvas laid down on panel, 59.5 x 46 cm, is still in Dresden (O. Naumann, op.cit., Vol.I, pp.84-85 , plate 127).
