Lot Essay

The sitter is possibly Lady Mary Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander, 8th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Elizabeth Crichton. She married Sir James Agnew of Lochnaw, 4th Bt., in June 1683. She died in 1742 and was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh.
