Lot Essay

Lady Jean Keith was the second daughter of William, 2nd Earl of Kintore (d.1718) and Catherine Murray, eldest daughter of the 4th Viscount Stormont. The artist John Alexander was known to have visited Keith Hall in 1736 and is thought to have painted the portrait of Lady Jean Keith's brother, William, 4th Earl of Kintore (c.1701-1761) at about that time. The portrait of the 4th Earl of Kintore is currently on loan in the Collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, and stylistically, bears a strong resemblance to the portrait offered here.
