Lot Essay

Algernon Hawkins Thomand, 9th Earl of Kintore was Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony of South Australia from 1889-1895. Kintore took a deep interest in the colony under his charge, he travelled extensively and was also interested in Federation and supported the Australasian Federal Convention at Melbourne in 1890. In 1913 he was elected Deputy Speaker in the House of Lords and was a Lord-in-waiting to both Queen Victoria and King Edward VII.
