The rectangular engine-turned case with central applied, pave brilliant and rose-cut diamond crest of the lion with sword and sun motif of Persia, beneath a crown, flanked by twin old-brilliant-cut diamond, oval ruby and turquoise clusters, within turquoise line border and rose-cut diamond trefoil corner motifs
9.5cm. (3 ) long
Accompanied by a manuscript note inscribed: Cigarette case given by the Shah of Persia to A.H.T. Earl of Kintore; and a photograph of Mozaffar al-Din Shah Qajar of Persia (1853-1907), inscribed faintly in Persian

Presented to Algernon Hawkins Thomand, 9th Earl of Kintore (1852-1930), Lord-in-waiting to H.M. King Edward VII by Mozaffar al-Din Shah Qajar of Persia (1853-1907) during a state visit to London in 1903.
