A RARE OLIVE-GREEN-GLAZED 'CANDELABRUM'
NORTHERN QI/SUI DYNASTY (550-618)
The pedestal base well modeled as an inverted lotus flower with overlapping petals turning outward at their tips, surmounted by two stepped rectangular slabs supporting a faceted horizontal bar surmounted by five horizontally fluted, ovoid holders, covered overall with a thin crackle-suffused glaze of greyish-olive color pooling to sea green in the recesses and continuing over the petal tips onto the flat unglazed base with central aperture

A very similar 'candelabrum' has been published a number of times; in the Ausstellung Chinesischer Kunst, Berlin, 12 January - 2 April 1929, no. 387; in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1935-36, no. 2479; in the exhibition, The Arts of the T'ang Dynasty, Los Angeles County Museum, 8 January - 17 February 1957, no. 268, when in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick M. Mayer and was subsequently sold in these rooms, from the Frederick M. Mayer Collection, 24 June 1974, lot 9. Now in the Idemitsu Museum, it was included in the exhibition, Chinese Ceramics, Enlightening through Beauty, Tokyo, 3 November - 1 December 2006, no. 6.
