AN ATTIC RED-FIGURE CUP TONDO FRAGMENT
LATE 5TH/EARLY 4TH CENTURY B.C.
Showing Ares, naked but with crested helmet, large circular shield and tall spear, standing turned towards a draped female figure (possibly Aphrodite), the latter offering a phiale to Ares in her extended left arm, holding a trefoil-lipped oinochoe in her right hand, around the scene a band of meanders and chequered squares, the exterior with remaining decoration including elaborate palmettes and volutes, and the lower part of five figures, sides A and B with similar scene showing central seated male figure with lance, flanked by naked crouching youth and standing draped female, with black-glazed ring foot
