Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Mrs. Wanda de Guébriant.
This sketch by Henri Matisse displays the artist's love of the female form and it recurs as a favourite subject matter throughout his career. Intimate details such as the top of the woman's stockings exemplify the artist's eye for details of dress and costume as the accessories of femininity.
