The Breda born artist moved to Leiden circa 1729. The present lot shows the influence of the Leiden masters, most notably Gerard Dou, in the choice of subject, light and the fine handling of flesh (see Leidse Fijnschilders, exhibition catalogue, Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden, 1988, p.174).
