Lot Essay

Little is known about Potuyl whose oeuvre is close to that of Pieter Jansz. Quast (1606-1647), who also mostly worked on vellum.
A comparable signed drawing is at the Schlossmuseum, Weimar, R. Barth, Rembrandt und seine Zeitgenossen, exhib. cat., Weimar, 1981, no. 386, fig. 60). Another drawing is in the Collection de Grez, Musée Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichnungen des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1980, V, no. 477), while a third was offered in these Rooms, 30 November 1987, lot 37, illustrated.
