THE PROPERTY OF A NOBLE FAMILY The following three lots are part of the service made for a member of the Venetian Foscari family. The sinister field is blue rather than silver, which would be expected on the Foscari arms, so it is not clear if this was a mistake or if a specific member of the family was entitled to the use of an azure field. For a discussion of this see D. Hoffmeister, Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister (Hamburg, 1999), Vol. II., No. 330 and pp. 626-627, where he also suggests that Francesco Foscari (1704-1790), the Venetian ambassador to the courts of Joseph II and Catherine the Great, was the probable recipient for the service. The most recent piece from the Foscari service to have appeared on the open market was the teabowl and saucer sold in these Rooms on 11 December 2007, lot 110. Other pieces from the Foscari service which have appeared at auction include a spoon-tray, from the Collection of the Late Lt. Col. Dundas, sold in these Rooms on 30 October 1967, lot 130, and a slop-bowl, anon., sale Sotheby's, London, 26 September 1989, lot 109. Several teabowls and saucers have also appeared at auction, including: the Property of a Gentleman, sale in these Rooms, 28 June 1976, lot 116; anon., sale in these Rooms, 13 November 1989, lot 145 (the saucer formerly from the Klemperer Collection is now in the Hoffmeister Collection); The Joseph A. Wilby Collection sale, Sotheby's, London, 2 March 1994, lot 52, now in the Hoffmeister Collection; anon., sale Sotheby's, London, 17 June 1997, lot 81.

Bullet-shaped with a wishbone handle and faceted richly-gilt spout, the body painted with a continuous estuary scene with figures at various pursuits beside a monument, barrels and boats, one side with the crowned coat of arms enriched in gilding and flanked by winged putti supporters, above a double concentric line support, the cover chained to teapot (small shallow chip to spout, slight flaking to gilding, fastening link of chain defective)
