Lot Essay

Jeroen de Rijke and Willem de Rooij began collaborating in 1994. The pair's visually provocative films, installations, photos and printed material are essentially an investigation of the meaning of presentation and representation, highlighting the observer's awareness from aesthetic appreciation towards an enhancement of that awareness. They have exhibited at galleries and museums wordwide including MAMbo Bologna (2008); Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf (2007); Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York (2006); Stedelijk Museum CS, Amsterdam (2005); The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, Ireland (2005); Kunsthalle Zürich, Zürich (2005); Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2005); and ICA, London (2002). Selected group exhibitions include 1,2,3Avant-Gardes - Art as Contextual Art, Sala Rekalde, Bilbao (2007), Stay forever and ever and ever, South London Gallery, London (2007), Stage of Life - Rhetorics of Emotion, Lenbachhaus, Munich (2006); and Christopher Williams & Jeroen de Rijke Willem de Rooij, Secession, Vienna (2005).
