GERHARD, Eduard (1795-1867). Vases Grecs, relatifs aux mystères. Stuttgart and Tübingen: J.G. Cotta, 1839.

Large 2° (715 x 610mm). 12 engraved plates. Original blue printed wrappers (light wear at extremities).

FIRST EDITION. AN EXCELLENT COPY IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. Gerhard collected the vases, all of which bear scenes relating to mystery cults, during an earlier visit to Naples. He had intended to include them in his exhaustive Antike Bildwerke, but was prevented by the sheer scale of the paintings. A companion volume of explanatory text was intended, but it is unclear if this was ever published. Not in Blackmer, not in Brunet. Vinet 1556; Borroni 11853 (3 plates only).
