HARVEY, William (1578-1657). Exercitationes de generatione animalum ... de membranis as humoribus uteri: & de conceptione. Amsterdam: Louis Elzevier, 1651. 12° (119 x 68mm). Additional engraved title, printed title with printer's device (lacks final blank, engraved title with small stain in lower corner, upper margin closely shaved, occasionally touching headline). 19th-century vellum gilt, gilt edges (lightly soiled). Provenance: Thomas Vernon (armorial bookplate on verso of printed title) -- J.W. & D. Farrer (armorial bookplate on pastedown).
Published in the same year as the first edition (London, 1651), issue with the Amsterdam imprint on the engraved title. "Harvey was among the first to disbelieve the erroneous doctrine of the 'performation' of the foetus ... the chapter on midwifery in this books is the first work on that subject to be written by an Englishman" (Garrison-Morton 467, London edition).
