Lot Essay
A closely related chair was supplied to Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (d. 1782), for Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire and passed by descent at Wentworth to his nephew, William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (d. 1833) and by descent until sold by the late Olive, Countess of Fitzwilliam, 'Wentworth', Christie's, London, 8 July 1998, lot 23 (£27,600). A set of dining-chairs formerly at Wentworth Woodhouse and later moved to Coollattin, Co. Wicklow (listed in Christie's house sale catalogue, 26 September 1977, lot 99, but sold privately), feature an almost identical leg pattern and a more elaborate arched splat design (it is pierced). The set of chairs was illustrated in Wentworth Woodhouse in Country Life in 1924.
