A RARE RUSSIAN (TULA) FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL INSCRIBED QASTAN TANEER
DATED 1776
With swamped etched twist barrel formed in two stages, the breech decorated with panels of gold-encrusted foliage enclosing a gold-lined maker's stamp (partly read as) 'Amal Ali', with two smaller gold stamps 'Amal' and 'Ali' respectively, the gold Islamic inscription 'Qastan Taneer', the date '1776', and all within gold-encrusted bands, a further gold band at the muzzle and the tang decorated with a gold flower, bevelled lock inlaid with an inverted rendition of the barrel inscription within gold linear borders, carved figured walnut full stock and gold-encrusted iron mounts all in the characteristic Tula style, horn fore-end cap, and later ramrod

Lot Essay

The name 'Qastan Taneer' in Muslim and is almost certainly that of the owner, presumably a native of the Islamic provinces of the Imperial Russian Empire and most likely a senior Cossack officer.
