With brass swamped barrels formed in two stages with moulded girdles, the breeches inscribed 'No.42 Bristol Troop', signed bevelled locks sparsely engraved at the rear, rollers, walnut full stocks, flat-sided butts, engraved brass mounts including trigger-guards with acorn finials, and one original ramrod, Birmingham Private proof marks

Lot Essay

The Bristol Troop of the Herefordshire militia, under the overall command of Lord Bateman, achieved infamy for its actions during The Bristol Riots of September 1793. On the 21st a large body of militia fired upon and bayonet charged the disorderly crowd, killing eleven and wounding forty-five.
