Fraktur type, type-ornament border to each page. 44 WOODCUTS WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING, comprising: 37 armorial woodcut illustrations, the first the arms of Albrecht, Pfalzgraf of the Rhine, the remainder within laurel wreathes [E2v with woodcut laurel wreath but without arms]; double-page woodcut plate of an "armorial-wheel" with Albrecht's arms at the center; folding double-page woodcut plate of the masque of Ferdinand of Austria; 5 double-page woodcut plates of tournament scenes; woodcut arms of the author and printer at end of text and on colophon respectively, woodcut illustration and initials. (Some minor browning and staining, small portion of fold in folding woodcut repaired affecting a few letters.) Rebound with contemporary gilt and silver stamped goatskin sides inlaid, gilt and gauffered edges (cracking and splitting to sides). Provenance: Prince Liechtenstein Library; H.P. AN ELABORATE ACCOUNT OF THE WEDDING OF WILHELM V (1548-1626) DUKE OF BAVARIA AND RENÉE (1544-1602) DUTCHESS OF LORRAINE, held in Munich in 1568. The folding woodcut (300 x 1010 mm) shows the chariot, drawn by four white horses, in which Ferdiand of Austria made his entry into the masque which followed the wedding ceremony. Wirre, who arrived late for the festivities owing to bad weather, composed verses on the European nobility present, which are accompanied by woodcuts of their arms. The laurel wreath on E2v was intended for the arms of Ott von Byland, but, as Wirre explains in the verse, "sein Wappen mir erkandt ist nitt." Wirre also composed a full account of the events, costumes, and spectacles; double-page woodcuts illustrate five of the jousting matches.
