A carved and painted wood sculpture of 'Old John Willett' conceived in 1906 by James Pryde is in the Collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue by the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation, Rascals and Ruins The Romantic Vision of James Pryde, September 2006, no. 17. The present lot is a plaster version of the same subject.

James Pryde (d. 1941) was William Nicholson's brother-in-law and on the occasions when they worked together they named themselves the Beggarstaff Brothers.
