At the beginning of 1914 Leo Gestel left for Mallorca to be able to paint en plein air during winter. From January until May of that year he stayed near El Terreno, accompanied by his wife and their friends and colleagues Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz, later joined by the collector Piet Boendermaker and his wife. Gestel worked hard during that period, finishing a numerous amount of studies in pencil, pastel and watercolour. He depicted the landscape and the picturesque harbours of the island in geometric forms, reaching the pinnacle of his cubist period. Using soft colours Gestel represented the strong sunlight on the landscape of Mallorca. The present lot shows a rocky hillside with trees, leading the eyes of the beholder, through the sequence of geometric planes, up to the village houses and the blue sky.
The 25 paintings and several drawings Gestel brought back from the island are considered to be a small elite group within the entity of his art of that period.
