Edo period (19th century), Inlaid square ceramic seal Kan
The tobacco container carved in the form of a gourd, inlaid on one side with a praying mantis eyeing a beetle, both of inlaid green-glazed pottery, the wood polished to golden brown with darker stained details, the interior and rims brushed with red lacquer; fitted with a large netsuke carved as a rolled leaf enclosing a cricket; carved black lacquer bead ojime
Tonkotsu 3½ x 2 5/8in. (8.8 x 6.8cm.)
Kan is the seal used by the seventeenth-century master Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo) and followers.
