A LACQUER PICNIC SET (Sage-Jubako)
Edo period (early 18th century), Flasks stamped Yuya Hisaemon
With four stacked food containers with lid, an upper rectangular drawer container, a square removable tray, and lower rectangular container cut with two circles to support the bases of two pewter sake flasks within the rectangular carrying case mounted with a metal u-shaped hinged handle; lacquered in gold and black in hiramaki-e, low-relief takamaki-e, togidashi, nashiji, roiro and details of hirame and kirigane with scenes on the case from the folk tale Taishokan, the top of the case showing the founder of the Fujiwara clan in a boat raising by rope a diver woman who has descended to retrieve a gem, here a raised inlaid-copper disc, from the sea palace of the Dragon King, represented by two dragons along the sides of the case; the food containers decorated with flower or bird-and-flower medallions reserved on a striped ground of floral and geometric bands, the interiors and bases nashiji, the square tray lacquered with the Three Laughers of Tiger Valley beside a bridge crossing a rushing stream
