An Earthenware Tube-shaped Tea Bowl (Tsutsu-jawan) Named "Tsuki ni saru" (Monkey and moon)
Black Raku ware, Edo period (17th century) by 3rd-Generation Raku master Nonko (Donyu; 1599-1656)
Hand-modelled, cylindrical with compressed disc foot, incised with short lines to indicate the outline of a monkey extending one arm toward an incised crescent moon, the rest of the bowl applied with a glossy and thick black glaze
4 3/8in. (11.3cm.) high; 4 5/16in. (11cm.) diameter
Wood boxes authenticated by Sen Soshitsu XI (Gengensai; 1810-1877) and Raku Kichizaemon X (Tannyu; 1795-1854)

Fuyu fukaki minezo sabishiku mashiramoya
