Sir John Forbes (1787-1861), was a physician and medical journalist. In 1821 he was encouraged by Sir John Clark to translate René Laënnec's De l'auscultation médiate or Treatise on Diseases of the Chest, which made use of Laënnec's new invention, the stethoscope.
