A SMALL BRONZE RITUAL TRIPOD FOOD VESSEL, DING
SHANG DYNASTY, 12TH CENTURY BC
Raised on three slightly tapering columnar supports, the sides flat cast with a band of diamond and circle pattern below narrow panels of dissolved dragons centered by an 'eye' and reserved on a leiwen ground, the decoration with black inlay, with a pair of bail handles rising from the canted rim, the interior cast below the rim with an inscription, with mottled dark grey and green patina and some malachite encrustation
6¼ in. (15.9 cm.) high, Japanese wood box

Lot Essay

The inscription is a clan sign, Yi Ya Gao.
Compare the Shang dynasty ding of slightly larger size (20 cm. high) flat cast with a similar diamond and circle band, but with a band of pairs of birds rather than dragons below the rim, illustrated in Zhongguo Qingtongqi Quanji - Shang, vol. 2, Beijing, 1997, p. 18, no. 18.
