A RARE BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE JARDINIERE
KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE IN A LINE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
Raised on four ruyi supports, the sides flaring outward at the corners and each finely painted with a different scene, one with two scholars leaning on a pine tree as they converse near a waterfall, the other three with river landscapes, all below the flat everted rim with indented corners painted with cranes grasping lingzhi in their beaks as they fly amidst clouds between the spreading peach-laden branches at the corners, the reign mark painted on the underside of the rim

Provenance

Acquired by the grandfather of the present owners, Whampoa, Guangdong, circa 1890-1920s, thence by descent within the family.

A nearly identical Kangxi mark and period blue and white jardinière is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Qing Shunzhi Kangxi Chao Qinghuaci, Beijing, 2005, pp. 516-7, no. 336.
