Lot Essay
The decoration of this plate features the most popular ornamental motifs of 18th century European porcelain and is executed in the famille rose palette.
The geometric openwork around the border appears in many Chinese porcelain pieces from the 1760s. The exact date of this plate, as well as the story behind its commission, is unknown. However, it is likely that it formed part of a larger set of openwork plates.
A soup plate with the same decoration may be found in the Hillwood Museum in Washington. See:
M. C. Ross, Russian Porcelains, Washington D.C., 1968, p.411, pl. 139.
A similar plate with a pierced border, from the collection of G. A. H. Bausman, can be found in the Gevin-Ghiklopen Museum in Amsterdam. See: G. A. H. Bausman, 'Commissioned armorial plates in Netherlands and Russia: Cultural connections and political intrigues', Pinakoteka. Volumes 24-23, 2007.
