A porcelain plate
by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, 19th century
Circular, the border painted with a band of ochre foliage and berries on grey ground within puce and ciselé gilt rims, the centre later painted with a portrait of Emperor Nicholas I and his spaniel with a coastal scene beyond, marked 'N I' and inscribed on the reverse in Russian, signed and dated, all in overglaze black
9 5/8 in. (13.8 cm.) diameter
The Russian inscription on the base reads: 'Portrait of His Highness Nicolas I/after a painting by F. Krüger/1837/V. Eliseev.'
