Lot Essay

The series of Russian street vendor figures produced primarily by the Gardner Factory and Imperial Porcelain Factory were inspired by J. G. Georgi's Description of Peoples of Russia published in St Peterburg 1776-1777 and Volshebnyi Fonar' [The Magic Lantern] published later in 1817. Alexander Orlovsky's 1825 Collection de Cris et Costumes de Paysans et St. Petersbourg may have also been a significant influence.
