TWO PORCELAIN GROUPS OF YOUNG COUPLES
by the Popov Porcelain Factory, Moscow, first half 19th century
Both realistically modelled, the first, a large group depicting a young man in a finely painted waistcoat and hat, resting against a tree-trunk and playing the bag-pipes, leaning towards a young lady holding a basket of apples; the second of a young couple seated by a tree, embracing, the girl in a long lilac dress, the boy with a white open shirt and brown coat, with a dog jumping on his lap, both on naturalistic shaped bases decorated with applied flowers, the second with gilt rim, both marked under bases with incised, blue underglaze Cyrillic monogram 'AP', the first group with incised Cyrillic 'I'
