Collection of Drs Hermann and Margaret Burg; and by descent to the present owner.

The Burgs were well-known historians, collectors and dealers in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, having a gallery in Cologne until the early 1930s. A number of books and papers were published by them during this period including works on Greek, Roman and Egyptian minor arts. After having moved to Holland, where they worked closely with the Leiden Museum, the Burgs finally settled in London in 1940, having fled Nazi occupied Holland. Here they continued to acquire antiquities for major museums and private collectors. Margaret Burg travelled extensively in the Near East after her husband died in 1946 and continued adding to her own private collection until her death in 1957.
